Bike Coalition

Lighten Up recognizes the importance of safe and accessible biking and walking environments in the fight against obesity. Consequently, our members have helped to establish the Coalition for a Bicycle Friendly Lancaster. This community coalition was created to challenge Lancaster City officials to make Lancaster City more bicycle friendly by completing a "Bicycle Friendly Community" application through the League of American Bicyclists. As we await our designation status, the Bike Coalition continues to recruit new members that are interested in working on one of the following teams to improve the bikeability of Lancaster:
  • Education- The education of motorists and riders is critical to creating a safe biking community
  • Encouragement- Focuses on promotional messaging, events and programming that encourage the use of bicycles in the community.
  • Enforcement- Focuses on establishing an alliance with law enforcement in the community to help ensure the safety of cyclists.
  • Engineering- Focuses on aspects of the built environment that promote or discourage cycling in the community, i.e., bicycle parking and connectivity
  • Evaluation & Planning- Focuses on evaluating the systems and programs in place for the accessibility, safety and encouragement of cycling.
