In the Schools
It is important for schools to have a rich culture of health for their students. Most students spend a minimum of 7 hours/day , 5 days a week at school. They eat at least one meal a day there; many students eat two meals a day at school. Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity lead not only to obesity, but also negatively impact students’ academic performance such as: high rates of absenteeism, poor classroom behavior, an inability to concentrate, lower self-esteem and lower cognitive performance and test scores.
To help schools increase their culture of health, the Coalition works with public and private schools throughout Lancaster County, providing support, resources and encouragement to adopt policies that promote good nutrition and physical activity. LULC also works with School Wellness Councils.
