How to Implement Worksite Wellness Challenges
An Employer's Guide to Promoting Weight Management in the Workplace
Assign a Challenge Coordinator. The Challenge Coordinator will
- Register participants
- Distribute challenge log sheets
- Collect challenge log sheets
- Answer participants' questions
- Distribute incentives (if any)
Design a Challenge. Determine the goals and objectives of the Challenge. Examples include:
- Eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day for at least 20 days this month.
- Earn one point for every fruit or vegetable you eat over the next 4 weeks.
- Be physically active for 30 or more minutes a day for at least 20 days this month.
- Record the number of steps you take over the next 4 weeks.
- Watch less than one hour of TV per day for at least 20 days this month.
- Eat a balanced breakfast, lunch and supper for at least 20 days this month.
- Drink six 8 ounce glasses of water a day for at least 20 days this month.
Determine the prizes for the winning participants or teams. Examples include:
- Gift card for a local grocery store or farmer’s market
- Fruit basket
- Insulated lunch bag
- Coupon for a healthy lunch/dinner
- Healthy cooking equipment (steamers, blenders, grill pans, etc.)
- Healthy recipe book or subscription to healthy cooking magazine
- Designated parking spot
- One hour leave time
- Certificate from management
Set the dates
- Identify the start date and the end date.
- Promote the challenge at least two weeks prior to the start date.
Promote the Challenge
- Use e-mail, intranet, newsletters or bulletin boards
- Post signs throughout the worksite (template provided)
- Ask the CEO, President or Manager to announce the challenge at the kick-off, staff meeting, or other function.
- If money is available, give out freebies – cups, t-shirts, etc.
Register Participants
- Sign up through Challenge Coordinator via e-mail or in person
- Register on "Sign Up Sheets" located at key locations throughout the worksite.
The challenge begins and continues. The Coordinator can encourage participation and enthusiasm by:
- Providing a "Tip of the Week" on a bulletin board or via e-mail.
- Send an email notification once a week to remind participants to complete their log sheets
- Provide a weekly newsletter with information related to the challenge.
The challenge ends.
- Remind participants that the challenge is coming to an end approximately one-week prior to its conclusion.
- Collect log sheets at the designated location(s) on the designated date.
Notify winners within a couple of days of collection. Sending out an email or placing an announcement on a communal bulletin board congratulating winners is a great way to wrap-up the Challenge and praise the participants.
Evaluate the Challenge
- Record how many people participated.
- Record how many people completed the challenge.
- Survey the participants to determine what they liked, what they disliked, and suggestions for improvement.
