Developing a Stairwell Initiative at your Worksite
An Employer's Guide to Promoting Weight Management in the Workplace
Using the stairs instead of the elevator is one way to get more physical activity in your day. Stairwell initiatives encourage stair use through a variety of physical improvements and promotional signs.
- Brainstorm ways to maximize the appeal of the stairways in your workplace and ways to implement the initiative in your workplace.
- Paint – Select paint colors that are bright and inviting. If possible, have employees pick out the color scheme.
- Artwork – Perk up a stairway by hanging artwork. Choose from a variety of posters, motivational quotes, work by local artists, or have a co-worker with artistic talent paint on the walls. Artwork can be rotated through the stairwells to maintain interest.
- Motivational signs and prompts – Post signs that encourage stair use next to stairwells and elevators. For samples of motivational signs click here or check out www.cdc/nccdphp/dnpa/stairwell/motivational_signs.htm
- Carpet and/or Rubber Stair Treads – Create a safe and inviting environment by installing carpet and/or rubber stair treads. Carpet and rubber treads also minimize noise.
- Enhance Lighting – Brighten up the stairwell by adding more lights or installing brighter bulbs.
- Music – Improve the atmosphere of the stairwell by adding music. Music systems can be wired or wireless. If possible, give employees opportunity to provide input into the music selection.
- Take your ideas to management.
- Develop a proposal – Provide a brief overview of the project and a justification for any costs. List the improvements you think are necessary and the costs associated with them. (Consider including several options.) Identify who would be responsible for making the improvements and which department would pay for the improvements. Changes to the building may need approval from building management.
- Prepare a budget – Outline each element of the proposed enhancements and the departmental budgets responsible for each.
- Communicate with Building Management to understand safety regulations – Understand important building regulations so there will be no safety violations.
- Encourage Stairwell Use.
- Promote the stairs as a way to maintain every day activity levels and achieve weight loss or fitness. Encourage all levels of your organization to model these behaviors and support one another.
- Organize stairwell events or competitions to maintain fun, camaraderie, and motivation. Consider implementing team-based challenges that use the stairs to "climb a mountain" or favorite landmark. A sample form can be found at www.LightenUpLancaster.org.
- Provide employees with prizes and incentives for reaching goals and milestones. Prizes as simple as a ribbon, certificate, or colorful wristband are recognized as a symbol of achievement.
Team up with your co-workers to start a "Stairwell Club." Encourage the club to take the stairs during breaks or lunch as a way of fitting in some fitness.
